    The cleaning rod came in that canvas sleeve, the GI pushed it into his stock. When he used it, he just pulled the rod sections out and left the sleeve, it stuck.

    That actually makes sense. I have one of those canvas pouches with the rods, and it always for some reason manages to make its way to the very back and gets waded up.
