SRS M1 National Match Serial Numbers
In his new book on the M1 Rifle Bruce Canfield shows, as "Table 7" page 840 - 845, a list of M1 NM Rifle Serial Numbers, Courtesy of Frank Mallory (SRS). Most of the rifles in this list are NM Rifles returned from Gun Clubs, some are listed as NM rifles shipped from SA to the Army (AMU).
Some are listed as "CAMP PERRY DCM NMSD". Does anyone know what this indicates and just what does "NMSD" mean ? Could this mean the rifle was sold at Camp Perry through the DCM ? Could the "DCM NMSD" stand for "DCM S (sales) D (Document).
Hopefully someone will know exactly what this means. Thanks, Joe

Don't know what those notations mean, but FWIW I remind you of the futility of ascribing NM status to a rifle because there are several serials close to it in SRS. There was no serial block allocation for NMs, they were picked at random. In the Type 1 era 1953-1957, they were selected from regular rifles that shot straight in testing... one accurate one could be selected from less accurate brothers on each side of it. In late T1 1958-1959 and the Type 2 era 1960-1963 new NMs were built on any receiver that met specs, including WWII rebuilds. So forget SRS for evidence of possible NM status unless the serial is specifically listed.

Bob, the rifle I speak about is specifically listed by serial number in the SRS records of "M1 National Match Serial Numbers". All the record shows is "serial number, "date of Citation" as 10-27-82. and under "Comments", Camp Perry DCM NMSD.

Sounds like a club gun. The condition that I saw of the rifle indicates as such. Type 2, but heavily used.

Late in the game, clubs were offered the opportunity to buy or return their NMs. Unless members wanted to buy them, many clubs sent them back.

As it turns out, the rifle was received by CMP in 2007 from the U.S. Army. I received a letter from CMP indicating that they, CMP, sold the rifle on 30 July 2007 as a " M1 Garand National Match Type 2 Excellent ". The rifle was built for 1960 but has a few latter NM parts added such as a hooded aperture and a NM marked op rod. I bought it because I don't have a 1960 built NM and they are not that easy to come by. At least not one with the original barrel that has not been subjected to a latter upgrade.

Turns out NMSD is National Match Support Department and as EB2151 said, they include loaners and school rifles.
