I always thought the term "controlled feed" was a marketing ploy by certain American firearms manufacturers. That ALL I ever thought it was!! I plead ignorance!!!

Would not the Mannlicher clip fed rifles be more of a controlled feed system, like the Steyr 95 and the Carcano? These have been known to break extractors when single loaded. The Lee Enfield as stated earlier with a magazine cutoff is a push feed. I saw a fellow once get off 25 rounds in a mad minute by using the cutoff and simply tossing a cartridge in the breech and cycling the action.

Controlled feed Vs. Push Feed
The M98 Mauser design of the long claw extractor was such that after the round was expelled from the bore and extraction began, the claw exerts more pressure on the annular groove and face of the rim of the cartridge, due to the guide foot and relationship from it to bolt rotation not only for positive extraction but the purpose of ejection when that occurs as well. I guess thats the other part of "controlled Feed" that sometimes doesn't get discussed a lot maybe someone else can weigh in for how effective that really is. Ill carry a push feed in a box stand but a Mauser design when jump shooting the marsh. Double fed one time and missed a buck. Maybe thats why they put a cut off on the Springfield? For panic? I dont know. Got a Savage marked no.4 sporter for the same marsh purpose, never had a problem with feeding or extraction and detachable mag and fast bolt manipulation to boot. Never considered the terminology, they're all non the less interesting to me.

My Carcano is definitely controlled feed. Of the other Mannlichers, just from looking at pictures of bolt faces, some are, some aren't. Maybe someone with hands-on knowledge can give us the scoop on various models. (FWIW, the US Krag
is push feed but the Norwegian
is controlled.)
A rifle with cutoff engaged is neither controlled nor push feed, since the terms refer only to magazine feeding and the cutoff takes the mag out of action.
