30 Round Magazines
I bought several M1
Carbine 30 Round Mags. I bought a couple of New Looking SEY marked Hardbacks and some SEY & AYP marked Splitbacks and a couple of Unmarked ones. One of the Mags turned a goldish Color. This is not Paint. I put a small light scratch and you can see metal. I don't know too much about them and wonder if someone has seen this type of magazine before. Thank You
Here are more that look like the color is Plum looking. It's doesn't show much in the Pictures, but really does if you were to see them up close. How does bluing become a plum color and what could be the value of them. Thank You
Frank

The gold might be a coating of
cosmoline
Frank, maybe try some acetone or paint thinner and see if it disappears. The plum color is from a salt bath that needs either more heat or more solution when bluing. Like receivers in 94 Winchesters and a few
M1
trigger mechs that have turned purple, it's just the steel composition and the bluing solution that cause this. No increase in value I'm afraid...
Thanks Jim...I'll give it shot. I wasn't looking for more money i was wondering if there not worth anything because of the Color. Thank You Jim for Replying and helping. I was hoping someone would. Thanks

Those hardbacks really look nice. The ones I have, even though I don't think have ever been in a gun, have that 50 yr. old look, no scratches or dent.

My understanding is the plum tint has to do with the nickel composition in the metal and how it takes the bluing process.

I think that's right Jim. It would make sense as the other guns and parts described would share that...

Nice to see you Jim....Are what you saying the metals are not different it's just the amount of nickel they use in the making of the Metal or it is different metal ?

It has a higher nickel content, like stainless...which causes the different color. Nickle or stainless requires a different bluing solution to achieve the black/blue we're used to seeing.

I'd like to see pics of the front seams on those mags. They tell a story too. Military mags have a crimp in the seam. Commercial copies don't.
When they tell you to behave, they always forget to specify whether to behave well or badly!

Jim16...Just ask me and I will post at any angle...Any information about them just gives me more knowledge. I also want to thank the people that emailed me some great information about 30 Carbine Magazines. BTW...someone offered me a Great price and there Sold except for 1 Hardback. I wasn't ready to part with both of them ! it wasn't my intentions, but I still have more.I was reminded about a past 30 Carbine Magazine post here on Milsurps on the bottom of this Milsurps page. I found a forum site about 30 Carbine Magazines that I posted awhile back and forgot about it with this guy highlighting all the fake ones and where and what should be on Original USGI mags.
