Doesn't the "I" under a broad arrow stand for the place in India where all it's military kit was inspected/accepted before independence something like Inshapor although I've most likely spelt it wrong? People often, incorrectly, assume that the "I" stands for India?

The I under the broad arrow is the clue for Indian ownership on that bottle, the I & G merely conforming Indian Government.
Sorry I should have made that point clearer in my first post.

Apologies if I gave the impression that IG could be Irish Guards in thread 49 as implicated by 5th Batt in thread 50. Not so. I was just commenting that in some circumstances, IG did indicate Irish Guards. But not in this case.
Also, a thousand apologies for admitting to even reading this thread regarding oil bottle collecting...............

This one has certainly been in South Africa and the old 'Enfield-stuff' website shows it as an 'unknown' manufacturer.

I have an SMLE oiler that I picked up walking on the Somme. I haven't scraped off the surface to see what marking it has, but if anyone wants it, PM me - it's yours for the cost of P&P.
