On this one I used lines drawn on the side of the two halves together with a straight edge as a guide and eye balled the center when I drilled it. Yes, you need a little slop to allow any extra glue/epoxy to escape the hole and it helps if you were a little off drilling, sure.
In other instances I may use pilot holes and a clipped finish nail as a ersatz dowel center before drilling up to final size.
