Welcome to the forum. The hole through the trigger guard is for a sling swivel, the one through the stock is for disassembling the bolt.

Disassembling the bolt? My, I'll need to see how that's done. Perhaps I can find a video of that. I'm looking for the right ammo online right now. Getting this rifle as a present last night has filled my morning with research, which I don't mind at all. And thank you browningautorifle for responding to my post so quickly.

Stripping the bolt...you cock it and apply the safety to straight up, remove the bolt from the rifle. Remove the striker and cocking piece by unscrewing them from the body. Then the end of the striker(firing pin) goes into the hole in the butt so you can hold it to strip the rest...

Should add, don't do this under any lamps or windows until you are comfortable with it, and don't lean your head over it when turning the cocking piece 90 degrees once you've compressed the bolt shroud on the firing pin spring to remove it. Honestly no real reason to take it down that far on a regular basis unless you are degreasing and putting some protective oil on it for the first time.

How about posting a few pictures of your new K98
, Paul, if possible, please? I'm sure other Forum members would be interested to see it.

As said before - Welcomen heir. Or if you prefer - Welcome aboard!
The hole in the stock was also for the locking rod that secured the rifles in the wall racks in the barracks.

We go round and round with this one...but it never did make sense. I believe it to be a rumor, just a story that I never heard until the internet came forth. The rod would be miniscule and a locking rack would make far more sense in every way. To lock a group of rifles you'd need a rod umpteen feet long, that would be susceptible to bending and then would never fit.
Got pics of this locking system?
