Was the Ross Rifle bayonet issued with the Thompson SMG during WW2???

I recently purchased a 2nd hand book titled Bayonets by Frederick J. Stephens, published 1968, and captioned to photograph 85 a 2nd pattern Ross rifle bayonet it is suggested that these were re-issued in WW2 to the SAS for use with the Thompson SMG. I have never heard of this before or of any other bayonet being used with the Thompson for that matter. Has anyone else heard of specifically the Ross bayonet being used with the Thompson SMG, please?

Some Thompsons took the Krag bayonet. The Ross bayonet would have to be heavily modified to fit a thompson. A .303 hole vs. .450 plus changes to the locking mechanism. Just because it was published, doesn't make it true.

I have no idea if it's true or not true. I've not heard of it before and so it would be interesting to hear some thoughts from others on the matter.

I'd go as far as to incur the wrath of some by saying that it's NOT true. Just a gut feeling I get whenever I hear the cringeworthy words '.....as used by the SAS'*. I have read that the No7 bayonet was made the way it was so that it could be fitted to the Sterling SMG. Not true either but the dealer who looked down his nose at me told me it was, so ............ You can't win 'em all I say

Other phrases that bring on the same cringe effect; '.....do you know who I am' and '....i'm in the SAS....'

I thought that this would be the best place to ask the question but I am surprised that the author would say it if not true because I thought that he was fairly well respected. I don't see it being likely with guns fitted with a Cutts compensator though.

The Ross bayonet wasn't fitted to the Thompson either with or without Cutts. Yes, an attempt was made to fit a bayonet to the 1921 or 1928...but was discarded. So was the bipod, the longer cartridge and a few other things.

Like I have said a zillion times and will continue to say until the day I die as a warning to all would be authors. Everyone repeat after me.......... '.....the first person who reads your book immediately knows more than you. That's because in those two hours he knows ALL that you have researched over many years PLUS the tiny bit he knew before' Authors are not inflatable ......or is it infallible!

Just make sure that you're not holding your breath at the same time as you're keeping that open mind F-10. It is recorded archival fact that the only bayonets officially/approved for fitting to Thompson guns were as described in thread 7. The Thompson archives on this matter still exist (TCAA reply this morning)
