It would be interesting to do a side by side test with the screen disks and baffles. I have the feeling the screen disks would do very well.

I wonder what size wire cloth the disks are made from. There are so many choices. Probably best to use stainless and have them laser or waterjet cut.

Do you really need disks? Would wrapping the wire cloth into a tube work just as well?

Heavy duty stainless steel scouring pads work well around the barrel in my Mk5 Sterling. They are cheap and help make cleaning easier. I just replace them every time I clean it.

I was surprised to see to ports in the M3 barrel were so large and there are so many of them going almost all the way to the muzzle. The Sterling barrel has a section without holes so the bullet is stabilized before it leaves the barrel.

I am not sure if what he said about the mechanical noise is correct. Maybe the charging handle on the M3 makes a lot of noise? The Mk5 Sterling has very little mechanical noise. The loudest sound is the bullet hitting the target. The Mk6 makes a lot of mechanical noise as the closed bolt slams against the rear barrel support. It’s nothing like a gun shot, but it would give you away.

Yes, leaves very little for strength, but works like a hot damm...trying to bleed off the velocity. Works as well if you put the holes in the center portion of the barrel and keep 2" at each end for starting and stability.

I can't say I recall any mechanical noise. Just the jingling of empties on the concrete around me...300 in 15 minutes.

I found that continued use caused the stainless screen outside the gas bleed off holes in the barrel to be heated red hot by gasses and then it started to beat a hole in that spot. The baffles had carbon build up of course...as you'd expect. As you say, they aren't silent. Just doesn't sound like a shot.
