Would you legally be able to take the charlton, if it was tuned in, or are you restricted on where and how it can be used?
(Ignoring that it would probably not be the best choice for clean culling)

No, because it is select-fire. As a manufacturing dealer I am allowed to test-fire only. When it is finished it will be transferred to my collector's ticket and then not be legally allowed to be fired (even though it will be fully capable). A collector's licence in NZ allows pistols and 'Restricted Weapons' (MG's, mortars, etc) to be securely held but not fired with live ammo (blanks for organised re-enactment, theatrical events, etc. is OK). Restricted Weapons have to be stored with a vital part removed and stored separately.

On the other hand Rod, you could need to test fire it regularly, over a few years of course, in order to get it totally right for your collection. Nothing wrong with a 2 year test-fire and correction period before it goes into the not-to-be-used vault.............

My guns do get used for Army demos, pre-deployment foreign weapons familiarisation courses, etc. so there is little chance of cobwebs building up! Of course, they have to be temporarily transferred to my dealers licence for 'evaluation and testing'. This can be done without reference to the Police as long as there is a correct paper trail.

I only wish we could have similar legislation here in the UK. Unfortunately, it will never happen...

A good result yesterday on the goat cull - 60 goats and a pig. The run holder is happy and we will get other chances to hunt his 33,000 acre property. We drove up to about 2,000 feet and foot hunted to around the 3,000 foot level for 6 hours. Back onto the Charlton today!

Henry, we have suggested that to the Police and politicians a couple of times but they are definitely less than enthusiastic!

Thanks Jim. It is one of my own design and manufacture, aluminium outer, stainless steel innards, very quiet and enhances accuracy. The rifle is a Chinese Ranger, chrome lined 20" HB, 7" twist, and very good quality (fully the equal of anything from the US). It gives consistent 0.5 MOA 5 shot groups with 69 grain Sierra HPBT match bullets. It took out a billy yesterday at a lasered 509 metres (two shots unspotted, third shot just a smidge high, fourth shot kill).

I have increased the bolt travel on the Charlton to give a 3mm clearance behind the rim of the top cartridge (it only had 1mm before), and still avoided the bolt head taking any impact at the back of the stroke. Hopefully good results at the range tomorrow.
