just picked up winchester

I know next to nothing about the m1 carbine. I just wanted one. I picked up a CMP winchester sn 5751xxx. The stock is a winchester. I can see most of the cross cannons and I think the initials WRA over GHD (not boxed).

One questions I have is that it has a Underwood barrel Rough (the barrel is not smooth) I can see the flaming cannonball and -44 just behind the front sight? No month stamp? Was this common? Did winchester use Underwood barrels? The SN put manufacturing sometime in 44.

I know it is a mix master, I have a inland trigger group, Rock ola charging handle/slide box. Bolt is winchester.

Took it out this weekend and love it. I did have one stovepipe and one jam (loading) But still real happy Looks great next to my garand.

Thanks I sure more questions will come up as I dive in and really look at things.

Welcome to the forum, yes undated barrels were used and cross manufacturers happened. Also during time they were overhauled and a barrel would be replaced without concern as to maker.

There'll be a few along shortly that will help you consume your carbine...

You have a typical post war rebuilt Winchester. As the guys said it's not unusual for these carbines when updated to the last version to have had parts mixed. The barrel is a replacement as both Underwood and Winchester both made all their own barrels. Your serial number dates to about September 1944. Having a carbine is a great rifle to shoot and enjoy.

In Winchesters serial number block- 5,549,922 to 5,834,618 some of their Receivers were made by Underwood, and were marked T or AW below the serial number, often on the rear tang..... forward of the recoil plate.

The outside of the Underwood barrel has raised milling grooves from when being turning, common on all Underwood barrels.

Sometimes a worn die stamp left a light or nearly missing month stamp, or part of the year date.... So yes fairly common.

Did winchester use Underwood barrels?

During WWII production Winchester DID NOT use Underwood barrels.
A Underwood barrel found on a WRA would have been a replacement barrel.

Underwood stopped making carbines in April of 44 (4-44) but did continue to build and supply replacement barrels as a sub contractor and was 1 of 2 Prime carbine makers to get a post WWII rebuild contract, their rebuild mark was stamped usually on the left side of the stock... looking like this: .U.

Any Underwood barrel dated past 4-44 was a replacement barrel.

Look closely for a Month Date stamp.
Look for any type of rebuild stamp on your Winchester stock..... Like RIA over EB in a box, or AA, AN, BA, MR, OG, RA, RRA, RIA, SAA, SA..... etc.

Sounds like you've run across a CMP rebuilt Carbine.

One other thing. My brass flies out the the front right.I would say a 40 to 45 degree angle. I want to collect my brass but where I shoot you can not go in front of the shooting line at any time. Is my brass going too far forward. I cant get any of it. In videos I watch most fling the grassat about an 70 to 80 deg close to an ar 15 which I can collect the brass. Ejector worn? Or nature of the beast?

I see the rear sight has been pushed off-center to the left. I have three carbines and every one of them require the windage to be adjusted far left on the sight to obtain correct POI. I wonder if someone was anal enough for this to bug them and pushed the sight over so the elevator could be aligned in the center of the sight? I've not seen as many carbines as most other members here have, but I've not seen a rear sight pushed that far over. This is not a dig....just an observation.

I have an Inland that I aligned the rear sight on. It was way off. Just thought you should have equal windage adjustment in both directions. When the adjustable sights were installed as upgrades, the military manuals showed gauges that were to be used to keep the same windage (with new sight set to the index mark) as the original leaf sight provided . would it be wrong to have the rear adjustable sight off and put the older flip up sight on it? I just like the look better.
