Swap Meet Find: 1903 Cleaning/Oiler Kit

It's the early nickle oiler for the 1903. They were used on the later M1s and mostly the early issue at that. Later they were plastic. The brush will be a late one, I had a bristle brush, maybe horsehair in mine that came with my LL 300,000 number SA. Nice find, not worth the world but a good piece.

Jim, Thanks for confirming it's for the 1903, it will be heading to the buttstock of mine. I was after the toolbox so finding that was just a bonus The shotgun cleaning rod are made out of steel and the handle is iron; I'd never seen one of those either.

The grease pot is pretty slick! no pun intended. These oilers are new to me. When we shot the Garand in the military we were never shown these and they sure weren't in the buttstocks. We had them down to parade rest a number of times.

The nickle ones were issued until exhausted, then the plastic carried on.

The M1 that i got from the CMP had an oiler that had an inventory sticker dated 1964 in the buttstock.

Remember they were still doing refurbs and issuing them to RVN troops...and sending them offshore to others.
