I don't believe M1A1
handguards had those vents cut into them. Nor does the stock have finger grooves cut in. Not the U.S. version anyways.

I kind of like it. Not sure why the barrel channel at the front is cut off so blunt, but I like the piece on the LH side to catch the butt plate when folded. Also like the finger grooves and the ventilated handguard. The cross bolt piece at the back must be to reinforce the cracked area. I'm not sure if the action could be original to the stock, but the leather and rivets look like they've been around for awhile. I've got a hunch it's a modified US made stock, nicely done. Neat bag too, I've not seen those before, but haven't looked through all of my books yet. You need that one Charlie! - Bob
(it does look like a FAT stamp)

The problem is that even if the stock was originally an m1a1 stock it has been so heavily modified that it's only value would be as a curiosity. I agree with you that it appears as if the barreled action is likely from an Italian
used carbine and I would guess that it most likely came from the CMP
originally.

Beautiful and original M1A1
the seller stated. I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder but to me it's a piece of junk now. It's a shame someone took an expensive stock and did this to it. Since the carbine is an Italian
return it would seem it wasn't done a long time ago. Not a 60's sporter for sure.

It's a spare barrel & accessory bag for an M60 machine gun.

That is why unmolested originals bring high dollars. Although there are some pieces that have value.
