Just wondering why the barrel band spring and the barrel band were modified?
    Any ideas?

The wood is relatively thin in the bottom of the channel where the spring passes though and sometimes cracks leaving the spring loose. That or the hole the the spring is pressed into was wallowed out.

I've never seen one repaired (modified) like this one though.
