high serial number Springfield M1 Rifle
Sometime in the late 90's, an old friend brought this rifle over to show me, it was for sale too. Barrel was dated 1956 and DOD stock. I had Mac check the serial number a few years later, he could not find any data and said it was not a NM.
I passed on buying it. As I did not have a camera, I used lampblack over the logo and tape to lift off the markings kind of like finger prints. There are higher serial numbers but it was still a 6.1Attachment 89602

Robert, In the Summer 2007 GCA Journal the "Featured Rifle" article, " The Mysterious 6100202", by Bob Seijas, will give you some insight into these 6.1 receivers/rifles. At the time of the 2007 article it is stated that only 4 rifles and one (1) bare receiver had been found, and that "Army records" show that two others had been destroyed ". Last time I asked if any others had turned up was in Feb. of 2010 and Bob Seijas replied that he had nothing later than the 2007 article. It would be interesting to know if any others have turned up and if the rifle you posted was one of the known rifles in 2007.

Joe, thinking back now, I should have bought it - think it was somewhere around $2500.00. How many guys have a SA 6.1 rifle ? there are more 6 million H&R rifles around.

Joe, I found a note from Mac (James McCollum) dated Jan 3, 2002. I had inquired about serial number 6,100,256 with SA 8-56 dated barrel. Mac did not
have an data on this serial number. He did have 6,100,297 AF PG 4/63 and 6,100,499

Robert, I guess these are the 4 known 6.1 SA's in 2007 less the bare receiver.
6100202, 6100256, 6100297, 6100499 ( purchased from DCM by Roger Miner in 1958)
According to the 2007 article by Bob Seijas the rifle you saw (6100256) was purchased at the Ohio Gun Collectors show, sometime in the 1980's, by Chuck Clawson.
