Sometime in the early 1990's, I took apart 6,100,256 it had a '56 dated barrel and was not a NM. The highest serial numbered M1
was pictured in the GCA
Journal a few years ago

The "A4" inscribed on the receiver leg indicates a Anniston rebuild, does it not ? That would explain the late barrel.
The highest serial number would be 6100499, a NM M1
Rifle owned by Roger Miner. The story of this rifle can be found in the Summer of 2008 GCA
Journal.

This is indeed a re-built Garand
. A late rifle, for sure. But it has been through a re-build.

The latest M1
barrel that I have seen for the M1 was a 67 dated barrel, Springfield Armory closed in Apr of 68.

Nice find on the 6M rifle. I hope to add one of that range to my collection one day.
