The doctor who gave the news conference about Pres. Trump's physical used "y'know" incessantly, even as high as six times in a single sentence. All of these fillers (um, er, y'know) are unconscious attempts to say, "Don't stop listening, I'm still talking."

It also is a a sign of an uneducated or ignorant mind. It's akin to the excessive use of the F-bomb because one is too unlearned or ignorant to know the proper qualifier needed.

Unless, of course, that is the correct qualifier. This is sometimes the case. Ever change the rear spark plugs on a '99 Oldsmobile Intrigue?

To get back on topic, I have one of these installed on my Garand. Partially because I like fiddling with my guns and partially because it's cheap insurance. So, why not?
