I don't know what the Jap's did but I know what I'd do.
somebody's already been at that stock, correct? If it wasn't glued would come apart in two pieces?

I hope to put eyes on soon and I will answer. I suppose that answer would have some bearing on the method of repair.
Was assuming it was the open crack insert glue type but you may be right.
