The pin keeps the 22 shorts from backing up when the rifle is fired.
Think the difference is 44US versus other 44 variations?

Roy I purchased my mag from Havlin Sales and went to the site and it says the mag is for the 42,43,44b and 44us and comes with the short adapter.
Thanks to bob for clearing up my oversight. I can however load one LR round into the mag with the pin installed.

Yes, Havlin has said they have a mag for my rifle...I am sure it is the one you have.

At this juncture, I am still interested in what the original magazine was like.

Magazines for the 44US series and the 140 are two different animals. They have similar shapes and will fit the other rifle but the locking system is totally different. The lock on the 44US mag is on the mag itself and the 140 lock is part of the action. The mag you pictured is for the 140 and the one that Jonzie posted is for the 44Us series.

Side by side top is 44US series bottom is 140
    Hope this helps
