NO, it is NOT!! Not even close! Stock is wrong, in several ways. Sights are non-military. Swivels are almost always incorrect on carbines. Barrel length appears to be wrong. Only 5000 Model 1898 carbines were made, so they must occur in a specific serial nmuber range, etc., etc.

Definitely not a legit carbine but I like it. Not at $400 but I’d buy it if I saw it at a gun store for $250 or so.
I like banded front sights. If I could snag it for $200 I’d track down a nice old Lyman peep sight to put on it.
That kind of sporter is on my (very long) wish list.
Someday!

As Dick says, almost everything is wrong. That's someone's hunting rifle...and would be a nice one.

I was looking for a new Deer rifle on Gunbroker when I found this, more of a 1903A1 or 7MM Mauser sporter though, although after look a 1917 looks nice too.

This one is priced at $399USD and would be about right for that. Maybe a bit over priced to you, but if the bore is nice you'll never be unhappy. I expect you'll load for it though...

Hi Jim, yes I would load for anyrifle
My problem is I cant decise between a Krag
, 1903, or M1917 (already made sporter) I'm leaning in the direction of the 1917 but can't make up my mind.

M 1917 would be easier to get brass and ammo for. Walmart...
