Got another Bubba'ed Pattern 1914 Eddystone

Hi folks--
Well I picked up another Pattern 1914 Eddystone which Bubba got a hold of. The fore stock had been cut down to "sporterize" the rifle for hunting. The barrel was not damaged in his "hack" job. Here's where it gets interesting, Bubba did his job on a like new early 11,000 series fat belly Eddystone. The rifle had not been through the Weedon upgrades and the barrel is pristine!! The best barrel that I have seen so far. There is no rust or pitting on the metal parts at all. The serial number on the bolt, rear sight, receiver and barrel all match. The rifle looks like it had the orignial volley sights but unfortunately Bubba relocated the front swivel through the front volley sight fixture. Additionally Bubba took a grinding wheel to the front sight base to eliminate the front sight base ears. A real hack job. The main problem was finding a good early "fat belly" stock for the rifle. Since I wanted to keep the original rear part of the buttstock which is in excellent condition. I found an early Eddystone fat belly DP stock at a local antique gun show on Saturday. What luck!! The stock cost me the same price as the rifle. $100.00 US! I will have to graft the front end of the DP stock on to the front end of the original stock since I have done this type of work before it should not be a problem. I have no problem getting the metal parts that are missing or damaged by Bubba.

But I am looking for a front volley sight base for an Eddystone P14 that has not been through the Weedon upgrade process or damaged. I am not looking for the front volley sight arm just yet. If any body can get me some good leads to the front volley sight base it would be deeply appreciated.

You are extremely lucky bubba did not sand or carve the stock down so you could just graft on a new forward section and could skip all the garbage parts of the DP stocks!

Not much help, but if no one here can supply your needs I have seen that ebay has uncut Eddystone dial sight plates come up pretty commonly, sometimes with screws, as I am sure you are aware, it is the rest of the assembly that is the problem. Also if your spare parts bin or a want add does not supply any remaining Eddystone specific metal bits you need I have noticed that BRP guns and liberty tree collectors seem to have some choice of parts versus sarco and numrich sending you whatever garbage they have nowadays that occasionally can even be fakes. But if you have a better source than that for handpicked parts I would love to hear it.

An early rifle like that that missed Weedon would've ended up as one of those really nice matching EY rifles with all the original parts that come up from time to time.
Was the butt of your stock marked EY or stamped with a maltese cross?

AD-4NA -- The EY is on the stock, the left side of the receiver and the rear of the barrel next to the serial number. I have seen the large maltese cross on other Pattern 14's this one looks like a very small + stamp inside the British arrow property mark almost cannot see it. I managed to get all of the parts except for the front hand guard and the bits for the front volley sight. It is very tough to find the right parts whcih are still blued from the original production. As soon I get all of the parts in the mail I will start my surgery.

I will post pictures soon as I had to get a new cell phone as mine retired early. I also saw another 1950/60s conversion today. It was a Colombian .30-06 Mauser that was professionally sporterized. Nice job!! But it would have been nice in its original .30-06 configuration.

Fair bit of work there but it will be a nice one when you're finished. That just happens to be the second one I've seen today chopped right at the volley sight inletting with a band put right on top of it. Sorry to say you've just missed a few Eddystone dials just in the past couple months but I'm sure some will pop back up again.

You might follow up with some pics of the repairs here or in the restororers corner when you get around to finishing it, I at least would love to see them.

Several other projects popped up. I was given a Japanese Type 99 Substitute Standard 7.7mm Rifle and a re-barrel job for a friend's M1 rifle. Of course all of projects were pushed back when NJ went to a 10 round magazine and I had to permanently convert the magazines to 10 rounds. The Eddystone P14 is on my list of things to do and I will post pictures of the restoration.

Heard a lot of folks lost their magazines in boating accidents when that law went through.
