.410 musket conversion

it was an interesting shotgun, unfortunately would be much more fun with a standard 10 round magazine. Squirrels and marauding hamsters can require much shooting..

For those of you with experience with this version of the enfield, how does it actually come out as far as being useful? standard shotloads versus the 98 grain military round ball?

And what are your thoughts about it being turned into a sort of straight walled slug gun?

I think shooting a standard slug would be great, I wouldn't bother with round ball much...I'd likely be loading my own anyway.

My issue with .410 conversions is the wafer thin barrel walls post smooth boring.... Not sure I would trust them with many slug rounds.

Fine as a shotgun though, can't say I really see a point to them however, I would personally rather use a high powered air rifle for pest control.

Quieter and longer range.

Maybe...but they aren't very high pressure considering the original rifle...

Bought several of that were converted to single shot. Interesting piece of history. Don't think that I'm ready to try to shoot any of them.
Also bought a box of the 410 ammo. Also interesting stuff.

they are an interesting thing. Considering the number of enfields I see on auction sites that need how do they say, a new barrel.

It would be nice to find one of my own. And the standard .410 shotgun has a rather thin barrel. And theres a few youtube videos of guys shooting surplus .303 ammo in standard .410 single shot shotguns... that the safety issue may perhaps not be an issue...

There IS a company that was playing with 300 grain cast bullets for 3" .410. Standard pressure same as your favorite Remington slug.. But haven't seen that company in years.

Shooting .303 in smoothbored .410 .... Why the hell would anyone do that!

Am I missing something or is that the stupidest thing I have heard so far in 2019.

I started a thread , .410 RFI Musket in June of last year complete with a pictures and a description. The conversion is listed in "The Lee Enfield" as Short, Magazine Lee-Enfield .410 Musket I think it was designed to be used in riot control but as it was a single slug that was used and not shot I hate to think of the damage it would have caused if you happened to get in the way of one....

300 grain cast bullets for 3" .410

Should be about the same as a .410 slug, or the round ball they used.

Yes, I think that's right.

I had the chance to get them back when they came to town and there were some about new. All gone now.

At least its something different, and from the video reviews I have seen,,, they don't have any recoil. Kind of like shooting a 22lr out of one in the recoil department.

standard .410 slugs are used for deer hunting. legally its allowed but ethically ill agree it depends on range and accuracy...
