    First WWII Rifle Restoration Project

    Greetings all,

I have decided to restore a CE 43 Germanicon model 98 Mauser that was sporterized some time back in the 1960’s. I absolutely need to do right by this old historical rifle. Right now, I’m in search of information and sources for parts such as the cupped butt cap, front and rear barrel bands, cleaning rod, front site hood, and hand guard. Fortunately I have already found a suitable surplus stock for the rifle with correct German markings for the period. Any tips or tricks to restoring a rifle such as this? Pics can be found on the thread I had previously posted at https://www.milsurps.com/showthread.php?t=67349&page=1

    Thanks and kind regards,
    Max

I used to gather parts for my restoration projects at local guns shows. You might get lucky but for the most part, it’s a crap shoot. eBay has been my number one place to find parts and pieces. It usually ends up costing more to restore a gun but I understand why you want to do it. The stock alone is incredibly expensive if you can find a decent one that somewhat matches. In the end you will have revived a piece of history and you’ll enjoy the project. Just be patient in your quest for parts. I’ve also found folks on these forums are quite helpful too.

Ebay is good. Occasionally you will also find good parts at Numrich Gun Parts.

Numrich isn't what you might want. They often have things that aren't even close to correct or fit. Not as worth the effort as it was 20-30 years ago.

Gun parts corporation (numrich) doesn't give you the opportunity to buy parts by marking or manufacturer. There are a couple of parts sellers that sell their parts by the markings do a search but Ebay is the best place to find the exact matching parts your looking for.

My last two purchases from Numrich weren't what I ordered. Not happy with them but as the parts were cheap, hardly worth the hassle of sending them back.

    Update!

    The beginning...

I have decided to fully restore the K98icon with period correct original parts. The first (and most important) part I have already found is a duffle bag cut stock. Lots of character in it. Cleaned up the stock and polished all metal parts (every last screw) with light oil and 0000 steel wool. A good start...

Let me know what you think and provide tips?
    Max

At first I thought it was short but I guess it's just the lack of the bayonet lug...guess we'll see after. Here's a company in the US that has them new... Mauser K98 Military Walnut Replacement Stocks

Plenty of stocks about, put a wanted advert up in the forum, I'd do away with the one you have (Dufflebag cut)

While it may not be perfect I really like the history of the stock. It adds to the character and “bring back” nature of the rifle (no import markings).
