If it's Gibbs' work, I think we can be pretty sure that there were the typical two small V blocks that fitted into the gaps in the base. One would have a tapered hole and locking pin with lever and the other a typical rectangular slot for a single large claw. The existing screw countersinks clearly impinged on the rear block and were probably inserted after the scope and mounts were zeroed by the maker; whoever that was. Once those screws were in place, there would be no further movement possible, nor any way of providing for movement as the taper of the screw heads doesn't match the angles of the V block.Information
