    Prisons made or still make there own clothing. Very big industry in the USAicon. That style looks like middle 1950's.

    It is likely something along those lines. The style of construction and lay out and style of the buttons is very Russianicon in origin. Those coats were not unique to the gulag, they are also construction workers, miners and equipment operators jackets. I had a green one some time ago and it was very warm.
