My newly inherited Ross Rifle-What exactly do I have?
Hi all,
I recently inherited a 1905 Ross Rifle that I didn't even know my father had. I believe that I have either a commercial Sporter model or one that has been "Sporterized." The barrel does not appear to have been cut but I'm really not sure. It has a ladder rear sight. I'm very interested to know exactly what I have. Thanks in advance.

You have a sporterization of a MkII of some variety. If there is a serial number over the chamber then it would have been a commercial target rifle originally. If not, it's a cut-down ex-military rifle.
It looks like the butt has been heavily sanded, so probably no original markings left?

Thanks, there are no markings evident on the stock. I'll have to take a closer look to see if I can locate a serial # on the chamber. After doing more research and reading your reply though, I'm leaning towards it being a sporterized military gun. Thanks!

Can someone tell me what the measurement of the barrel should be for a MkII?

Barrel should be 28 inches from the front of a closed bolt.

Thank you. Mine is 28" so I guess that's a good thing that it hasn't been chopped.

If you (or someone else) decides to restore this to original mil spec, don't throw away the shortened stock. I can't bring it across the border, or I'd be in the market myself, but there's a number of people who'd pay to take it off your hands.
