M2A1 Halftrack restoration-- dialup beware

I have to admit I'm not impressed with this thread. I'm now finding my self wondering how much my Royal Enfields are worth and perusing sites such as HALFTRACKS.COM: Gary's Halftrack Parts, milweb and youtube looking for half tracks. Looks like I need a M16 with the Quad Mount!

So after all these years, I’ve only gone and done it! Thanks to Andy’s thread from .... years ago I was inspired to buy a halftrack and it’s taken me this long to get everything in place. Not much too much to look at and it will take some time, but one day it will move under its own power!!

What's the track supply situation like now, are they being reproduced now by someone, as when I was messing about with ex-mil WW2 vehicles in the early 90's, only the dwindling supply of ex-Israeli tracks were an option, and they were then, about 1500 quid a pair IIRC.......but memory cells are a little dulled after 25 years.

Stefan de Beul makes a repro set using better materials than the original so this is the European solution to the problem. The Israeli tracks occasionally turn up and are a little more than Stefans, I guess the availability of repro track has kept the Israeli track costs down but they are still double what they were 25 years ago.

And you don't get much mileage out of them either from memory........presume you have access to a low lowder then for carting the thing about?

2500 miles they estimate on originals but the repro set that Stefan has had made will likely last a little longer. A lot will depend on the road surface and how they are looked after but I don’t see me doing that many miles....besides I’ll likely be 80 by the time it’s finished!!!

Good to know the repro's are lasting a bit longer than originals. As you say, they aren't a thing for doing a lot of miles in, because of the track life.....and 2mpg from what I recall being told. Mind you the guy I knew who had one, used to use it for going to Tesco in just for the shits n giggles.

Tip of the hat to you sir. I've only gone through two pages but man what work you did. You should be extremely proud of what you have accomplished. I couldn't even begin to understand all of the work you've done to get where you are now. One question, I see what appears to be 5 gear shift levers. Would you be so kind as to what they are all for?. My only restoration would be an old 1973 CJ5 I had many years ago. Called it Nuts & Bolts. 1/4" diamond plate in the back with angle iron and 1/8" steel plate cut and formed by a welder I knew at work. Original floor plate was shot as were the bolts holding the cab to the frame. All my work was done in the back yard laying on the ground. Nice that you have the enclosed space and of course the bobcat with the forks. Thanks for sharing something that one doesn't see much anymore. Frank
