    The early Krag "trap less" butt plates were different than the subject butt plate in that they did not have the curve at the bottom. The subject butt plate is the unfinished forging. The two bosses are part of the forging. The next operations would have been to drill and tap for a screw for the spring and cut a recess for the spring. The next operation would have been to cut a recess for the trapdoor. The subject is simply an unfinished M1903 butt plate. How it got out of SA or RIA will remain a question not answered.
