Well that is a ***** fish and no mistake...
As Jim said, minute of Barn door, I can't for the life of me think of a single good reason why anyone would do this!
I enjoy shooting my M1A1 immensely, but accurate it isn't, that term is of course rather subjective with this class of firearm, it was designed after all to be accurate enough "for government work".
Mount an optic and zeroing with that set up would be a frustrating affair!!

Even more so when one considers how fiddly and awkward it is to zero a ZF-41 optic, even when fitted to the rifle it was designed to fit on....!!!
Just the thing for putting round holes in square heads.

I kinda like that idea, so I upgraded my great, great, grandpa's double barrel.

Many years ago, when I was young & carbine parts were cheap, I mounted a Leupold M8x2 long eye relief scope on an M1 carbine. It turned out to be a great home defense gun. Low magnification & a long eye relief are perfect for the carbine. I used a US-made clamp scope mount that required sacrificing a handguard by cutting a strip of wood from the front. Can't remember the name of the company that made the mount, but do know they are no longer around.

The sniper scope I was referring to were the M3 night vison scopes. Many stocks and handguards were modified for the mounting system. The experiment by Inland to mount a scope on a carbine was a failure. The scope was being banged by fired brass when ejected and was not long before it was damaged.
