The gun has been completely dismantled other than the safety and the rear sight. I found lots of cosmoline and a little bit of rust. It was pretty obvious that it hadn't been serviced or cleaned for a long, long time. I ended up breaking my firing pin removal tool because there was such much solidified crud in the bolt. It is soaking now and a new tool is on the way. The wood has been stripped and the second coat of RLO is soaking in. All of the metal has been cleaned after an oil bath and is now soaking in CLP. The barrel has good rifling but some frosting and pitting. Overall, it was in better shape than I anticipated. I hope to have it all back together sometime next week and will post some pictures.

All finished except the bolt. She was a real mess inside with a lot of hardened cosmoline and oil based gunk. The wood needed a couple of stripping sessions and 4 coats of RLO but it came out pretty nice. I saw something I had not seen with my other LE's (maybe I wasn't paying attention??), but the wrist socket on the butt stock has the serial number stamped into it. I haven't finished the bolt yet since my firing pin removal tool broke off while trying to remove it (hopefully the liquid wrench will hep when the new tool gets here next week). Hopefully mu friends and I will get to run some rounds through her in the next couple of weeks.

Glad you didn't get out the palm sander and the 30 grit paper. Too many do that and it ruins the look completely. The nicks don't matter, but the corners and lines do. It's already had a go one anyway. To sand it to glassy smooth and sacrifice the outside lines is tragedy. The matt finish now is much better. Yes, we've shown the number stamped in the butt in that area before...earlier threads.

Judicious use of a steam iron should raise many of the especially smaller dents.

Is that serial number on the butt stock socket specific to No 5's?

No, the No4's have it as well (except Fazakerley who use the body side)
Example with a Savage No4
Mine are not the best, but they are not too bad. I can think of lots of Enfields I'd rather have but instead of constantly striving for more, sometimes it's good to be satisfied with what one has...

Post #3 pic #4 seems to be a split that starts next to the top wood keeper ring that will need repair
