I got a type 99 and when I fired it my 7.7 brass turned into a 3006 Ackley. I do have a very good extra barrel but was wondering if I should try and work up loads for it but using the 312 bullets. It is slightly sporterized but started thinking this could be a pretty a pretty powerful sporter. I was going to try and restore it. It really just needed a stock but I see stocks cost close to a whole rifle. The spare barrel I have has a really good bore and the aircraft wing sight.

Are you positive on the 30-06 Ackley? Type 38 / 44 / 99 rifles are known for having generous chambers that allowed for grit/grime that normally jammed up other rifles.
Is the receiver or barrel marked 30-06? As a sportster?
You are correct on original stocks...for a few bucks more, you can buy an original rifle. Best bet is to use a suitable stock and shoot away.
The case got much longer and has the sharp shoulder and when I measured it it has the same dimensions as the ackely. No marking any where as to getting re chambered. The stock has been cut short on the forarm. I'll try and get some pictures today. I've seen nice stocks on ebay go for almost 300 or more. When did Jap rifles get so expensive for parts.
I was going to fire form some cases and then reload some. See how accurate it is. I don't know why people say Arisaka's are ugly. I think it's sharp looking.
I've been busy with other things but I'll give an update on this rifle. A 3006 will chamber but after firing it wont extract because I think the rim being a tiny bit smaller the exacter doesn't grab the rim tight enough. A 7.7 will. The extractor is pretty loose so I want to get a new one for it.
I've given up on wanting to fix it up.I have 2 barrels for it but I don't think the cost is worth it. Complete stocks are going for over $300 dollars. The rifle even came with the air craft type sight. Maybe I'll just get rid of the extra parts and just make it a plinker.
Yeah, that is the shame with sporters. You end up with an unknown project. I picked up a type 99 with deep luscious blue metal and a stock that was clearly being given an American length of pull mod. Can't complain because the wood work is first rate. But it was clearly getting more mods and is not finished. Also the sights were being modified. The front sight is definitely newer ramp type though well done. And the back sight was just the sight base. Which I'm replacing with an original. Betting the sights will be off of course. Any way it will be a pretty rifle that is mostly original.
Lord what what strong action. Curious to see how accurate the poly cut barrel is.

Anyone know why there would be a square area cut out in the rear lower area of the butt? Is this intended for a strap maybe?
