Good question. It is a very thin finish, reminds me of the Russian shellac but it doesn't flake off. Could be a very thin coat of varnish. The butt stock band is black paint, the middle band is narrow electrical tape, the front band is full electrical tape. The bolt handle and barrel are greenish like parkerization maybe but not. Also not sure if that is original color or color of oxidation. I think they were supposed to be silver
