Often wonder how glasses (as on the G.I on the right) survived first contact with the enemy. Or how the G.I. survived without them.

To me that pic appears to be "An old salt standing & a FNG" who has not discarded parts of his kit that are a hinderance.

Glasses stay on surprisingly well under most combat conditions. When you lose them for any reason, you are relegated to an appropriate space in your organisation if your sight is that bad. If it is that bad, you wouldn't be in combat in any case but in an appropriate mustering where good vision without glasses isn't required. Etc.

He's not an "FNG" he looks comfortable in the mud, and he's been there before. They both have full auto M14
's and his looks like a wood HG.

Exactly. You have guidelines of vision standards. At this point, I wouldn't be acceptable for much as my eyes have gone pretty bad and NEED glasses.

I am looking at it from the standpoint of no glasses= striped stick. Curious what the uncorrected spec is.

If i remember correctly I was issued two sets of BCGs. One with regular arms and the other with wiring arms to keep the glasses on your face also received a pair of prescription inserts for the Protective (Gas) Mask. The glasses were initially a clear plastic and then changed to black. Later you had the pick of some difference styles of frames. To get rid of the BCGs I later purchased Ray-Ban Aviators and had prescriptions clear and polarized lens placed in them. Oh by the way BCG stands for Birth Control Glasses as that was your chances of picking up a girl with them on. LOL!!
