So I’m not a major contributor here.. but do enjoy the threads and in particular the threads about 1903 sniper rifles and USMC sniping in particular

A few things

It is obvious some people need to be removed from the “Advisory Panel,” as they really don’t understand the subject matter they are posting about.. Second I used to correspond frequently with some of the people named in a recent post .. and can tell you they wouldn’t have agreed with the posters comments .

In particular Larry Reynolds understood a lot about WW2 USMC sniping /Unertl snipers (even though his understanding wasn’t derived from going to the archives).. and I’d bet would laugh at some of the total BS comments made (as would a few of the other people mentioned..

Suffice to say just because you have a title or post count doesn’t mean you have a clue.. USMC sniping has evolved over the years and so has the knowledge of how they were used in WW2.

Guys like Steve (corplnorton) have contributed immensely to that understanding. By using the archives and researching the topic it removes a lot of the speculation and “wives tales,” which unfortunately have been previously accepted.

It is beyond comical and shows pettiness when you make clueless post and then ask for the thread to be locked

When the thread is then locked.. IMO it discredits the knowledge and validity of the site..

When a thread is "locked" it just means that no-one can make further comments; it doesn't, necessarily, mean that the comments already made are "right" or "wrong".

Actually some things do have right or wrong answers.. correct MOS’s, units engaged, complete primary source documents, etc. Those things do have “right” answers.. I mean basic factual stuff isn’t that hard to get right..

I personally think it comes across as “covering for a buddy,” when you lock the thread because your buddy is being shown not to understand what they are talking about.. And when that individual is deemed an “expert “ or using the site’s vernacular “Advisory Panel” member… it is 100x worse..

Shouldn’t the real goal be the transfer of as much factual information as possible.. especially when discussing things which there are primary documents available? Also not forgetting we are also talking about rifles costing thousands of dollars..

IMO at the very least whoever identifies “Advisory Panel,” members should reconsider their member list..

The comments made on this forum recently are beyond absurd, and the deleting of comments and locking of threads appears to be protecting the the perceived reputation of those making fabricated and nonsensical comments.

I acknowledge that the realm of WWII USMC sniping is myopic and those of us who study it are an oddly passionate bunch. Perhaps that's because most of us are invested so heavily, financially and otherwise into pursuing and collecting these exceptionally rare rifles. And with the rifles comes an attempt to understand the history. We read the books, the documents and the interviews. We compare notes, share ideas, and constantly dig for more information. We do our best to protect prospective buyers of faked rifles. This may seem like a small realm of study, but those of use deep into it beg to differ.

There's lots of uninformed people on the internet. They make up nonsense and post idiotic threads all day. So be it. But when there's an attempt to defame the tireless efforts of one of the most dedicated researchers in the history of the subject matter, I'm not willing to stand by and watch someone with no depth of knowledge in that subject attempt to appear as the expert. Those efforts need to be squashed. On other forums, heated debate is allowed to play out. You want to have the respect of an expert? Prove you've earned it.

Apparently even private email warnings have gone unheeded.

If you have issues with who has been appointed as a moderator or who has been accepted as a member of the Advisory Panel, then take it up privately with site ownership, not turn it into a a public spectacle of your own personal opinions.

If you are unhappy with our free site or its content, or its volunteer staffing, then please find another site that better aligns with your opinions.
