I was certain you would...faith. Interesting that they chose to designate this the "M1

Black, must have been used by some police force? Swat?

Pretty sure the M in this instance stands for Medium. I was wondering about the black myself. Leave it be or remove it. I'm going to put a woodland cover on it so I'll probably leave it be.

But what do you think the "1" would denote then? Was there several "sub-sizes" of the medium size helmet, a bit like British
army boot sizes coming in small, medium and large for each size?
Congratulations on winning the auction.

Not sure what the 1 stands for. I have looked at several helmets and the letter at the top has been M, S or L. The numbers were different in many but 1 was the most common. Could be a lot number, mold number, I don't know.
I did some checking and no one seems to know what the numbers are. 1-6 are known. Mold number or manufacturer are the most common speculation but the manufacturer is also stamped on most of them so that seems unlikely. That leaves mold number.

No, there are a small, medium and large, I don't know about extra small or EX lge. We didn't have anything extra or sub size as you suggest. Our ideas came from others ahead of us, we wore the steel M1
when the US had already changed over. Our pattern came from them.

I was trying to establish what the "1" denoted as clearly it has some meaning. The question appears to have now been answered.
