We left over 3/4 of a million of all versions of the M16 rifle in Vietnam when the US left there.

I should think. Ours were loose as a goose after ten years of handling.

I have seen photos of captured M16 rifles that were re-stocked in some type of wood, during the war period.

It certainly would, the bright yellow plastic butt plate screams 3d printing to me...
One would expect if the Chinese decided to pour into the Lang Son Valley again (I think they still feel the world of hurt the Vietnamese dished out to them in 79) they would be spraying the furniture and the bright gleaming aluminium matt black a bit bloody quick...
