Surprising at least the MG team couldn't have got waterproof bags for their rifles; that gunner must have spent a good while getting the saltwater out of his. Or was this a shot retaken several times for the journos?
The gunner is wet to mid-chest height, but the water's not that deep or waves that high.
The No.2 is well loaded down - they could have used a No.3 to hump the ammo.
Caterpillar got some free advertising from that plate stuck on the bucket.

The Browning M1919A4 with heavy barrel, you would think they would all be M1919A6 by the time period

I was wondering if that was the case. If so he kept the gun dry anyway and falling to your knees with that on the back of your neck would be no fun.
A couple of guys in the back row decided it might be smarter to be able to drop both packs and rifles in a hurry. You'd think the officer corps would be on hand to ensure uniformity and a suitable appearance of gung-ho-ness, but perhaps they were off in the shade or still in the ward rooms?

Smart guy, he knows the locals will need refreshment after standing around in those white shirts for a while.
