Yep - I've got a factory fresh, unissued bayonet for my 1947 Fazakerly No5 that doesn't fit - the ring is slightly too small to fit over the flash hider

A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. Me too, but I've always wondered whether it's a fake or repro. I'd think a legit item would fit, but BAR suggests a little thing like that may not have been a high priority for the acquisitions civvies.

Were it one that had been in stores, it would have been altered to fit. Ask PL... What I was suggesting is makers marks don't count to storemen. Fitment and serviceability does.

Neil, I wonder if your bayonet would fit a Sterling SMG?

Possibly Mick, but I'm pretty sure its wartime (or very early post war manufacture), carrying the N187 code for Radcliff

Old rubber items can be restored with the right chemicals. There are vids about this on YT. I've used Simple Green degreaser and a soak in that for a few days does a great job on most rubbers and plastics, but the long term effect is unknown to me so would not use on anything irreplaceable.

Ah, yes....., No5 rifle bayonets. There were some bayonets that would not fit onto rifles and there was an EMER issued that gave the dimensions of a suitable plug that should fit into the ring-piece - if you'll excuse the phrase - to ensure that they would fit the rifles. If not, ypu were permitted to file the inside of the ring to clear the plug and it's fit the rifle. Never had a problem with fitting the little L2 SMG's. We also had a cut-off, white painted set of bayonets in the inspection bay that were used to test fit onto weapons. I kept one for years marked WKSP TEST-FIT engraved into the cut off blade.

Next time I sift through my old EMER's I'll quote the reference number

So if you;ve got a N4 that doesn't fit the flash eliminator, just open it up and tell the know-all next to you that the EMER authorised it!
