Thanks Jim! Yes that is a magazine. Don't know why I didn't see it to begin with.

He does have a magazine in his carbine, but I still think it is a grenade launcher. At the top you can see he's either missing the coil spring or it's the early version of the grenade launcher that has the flat spring. The M8 launcher could be shot through with regular ball ammunition when no rifle grenades were fitted onto it.
