Targetry with the "pear-shaped" scoring rings appeared just after the switch to the F-88 "green machine" / "Tupperware Rifle".
The original Austrian optics had a fine, central "cross-wires" inside the much thicker "Do-Nut of Death". Al on a etched glass surface (very robust in ant scope)
This was dropped in Oz service. Basically, the idea was to hold the "target" inside the "Do-Nut and squeeze. Because of the fairly "flat" trajectory of SS-109 / F-1 ball, a hit was a hit, especially as more "mechanical" ranges came into operation. The concept is similar to the elongated scoring areas on IPSC pistol targets.
