If it is 1962 it certainly doesn't look like it.
Apparently this was all hashed out six pages ago, and I did not intend to start it all over again, but the left side is clearly a straight edge and the top right has the end of the 6 exactly opposite where the 2 starts in the top left. It's clearly a 6. I can't even see the 8 anymore after noticing those.

A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. For the record this is not a moneymaker, I hope just to break even, eventually, at $80/book plus shipping. In the USA shipping is $5.00 for media mail. Clearly it is not and clearly it appears to be an 8. However it is a poor quality ink marking that has clearly been "smudged" during application.

Nothing is impossible and "spare parts/components" are often manufactured for a product that has gone out of production but remains in use.

My Frenchicon M1icon helmet shell in unissued condition is clearly marked 1952, with no "smudging", and so is a nice early example.
