    Says he was called up for the RHA at St Johns Wood barracks. He is still alive, aged 90.

    Looks like it could be a Mk1/2 rifle by the patch where the PLATE, Tie, fore-end has been removed, patched and replaced with a screw and nut, tie, fore-end
