Well, considering the fact that the Jamestown settlement was established in 1607 that would mean that 89 years elapsed before anyone started a school in any of the English colonies ... which cannot be correct.
VERY much correct! Virginia as a state did not have ANY compulsory public education until the beginning of the 20th Century. Education was the province of the church, not the state.

Supposedly TR was on a tor of the South. He was in MS, some politicians decided he might like a bear hunt. They had some locals tie a bear cub to a tree, then brought TR out so he could shoot it. He refused, of course. The press picked up the story and then a toy shop in NYC started selling little stuffed bears in honor of the occasion.

TR liked hunting, but he believed in a fair chase.

Here in Idaho we're starting to see "shooter bull" ranches, where you pay money to shoot a bull elk in an enclosed area. Not exactly fair chase and I can't imagine TR going for that kind of action either.

I should clarify....the better description would have been "free", tax-supported public education as a government entitlement. Virginia had plenty of schools, but you "paid to play" until the early 20th century. Education was a family or church responsibility, not the states, and so, would not be considered "public schools".

    .... OK ... I also don't notice anything about "public" schools ...

MARYLAND ... King Williams School opened in 1696. It was the first school in the United Statesicon .

Does "King William" sound like a church?

FWIW, why are you arguing with me? Look the stuff up for yourself. I suggest you access and read several papers presented by Dr. David A, Rawson to the American Historical Review. Dr. Rawson is one of the acknowledged experts in early Colonial literacy and education (PhD William & Mary, Research Fellow CW Foundation). (He is also my best friend, was my undergrad "roomie", and Best Man at my wedding...I was one of his proof-readers.)

    Teddy Bear

Roosevelt hunted bear in Mississippi quite often. It was one of his favorite places east of the Mississippi River to hunt. The "teddy bear" hunt took place in Sharkey County. Holt Collier an exslave and Confederate veteran (6th TExas Calvary and later Forrest Cavalry) was the guide for the hunt. After some time of unsuccessful hunting, Holt caught a bear cub and tied it to a tree for Ted to shoot, which he refused. Being that Holt was a black man, and the times what they were, the news media didn't mention him. You can go to Amazon and get the book about him. Holt Collier: His Life, His Roosevelt Hunts, and the Origin of the Teddy Bear by Minor Ferris Buchanan
