If I hadn't been there Villiers, I'd agree. But ALL of the probably thousands of No5 fore-ends I ever saw in Malaya, NONE were the short cut-off No4 type. But ALL were the correct length, regardless of whether they were No5 or shortened No4 types.
If it's a converted No4 fore-end, supplied by the trade to the
UK
MoD for the vast 60's Crown Agents programme in Malaya/Singapore, they were to No5 length, patched-in and pegged. If it's a civvy fix-it-quick-and-cheap ...........
Negative! The lower (shorter) No 4 to No 5 converted fore-end is from BDL
and they maintain that it´s ex-WD.
PS
Wouldn´t it be better when converting a No. 4 fore-end to fit a short plug into the lightening groove to re-inforce the cut for the fore-end band?

Glad to hear that the shorter No. 4/5 fore-end conversions are NOT original. Never liked the look of them. (So now I´ve gotta spare .... short ... No. 5 fore-end).
