Let me be first...Canadian-marked SMLE
I've been looking for a while, and the right one (markings, price, etc.) finally turned up. A 1918 BSA Co. Mk. III*.
It's not a beauty queen. There's some surface rust, while this rifle is also gummed up with cosmoline
in some areas (so some of the grunge in the photos is crusty cosmo)
Very much on the unexpected credit side of the ledger is the fact that this rifle is all-matching, with the exception of the rear sight leaf, which was replaced at some point. Even the cocking piece is s/n matched, though the last number is worn away. I hadn't been expecting a matching rifle.
The C-Broad arrow is stamped as it should be in the buttstock beside a blank disc, as well as on the receiver and barrel. The barrel is '18 dated, so I'm assuming it's the original. The bore is shiny with no frosting or pitting though, as you would expect, the lands and grooves aren't as sharp as they once were.
It's also complete with the piling swivel and even the ears in place on the front and rear handguards. The stock has the dimple for the never-installed volley sights. I will need to source a nose cap screw.
A pleasant surprise was the Canadian
-marked brass oiler (with the brass weight from a pull-through stuffed inside) tucked inside the butt trap.
Over the winter I'll be seeking guidance about how best to remove the surface rust and get the cosmo out of the nooks and crannies of the metal and woodwork.

Why does it pain me so much to see other people buying, shooting and enjoying their No4Mk1T snipers? Yes its because I'm green with envy.....
Nice looking piece Doug.
PS: I'm hearing rumours that Angel is actually your alternate ego.

Very nice, congrats.
(did I successfully hide my jealousy?)
Only 18 digits off...that means you've only got one and half dozen more to go to fill in the gap.

Serial number is just 18 digits higher than another one she has in her collection.

gunshow SMLE
Bought this at a gunshow last weekend, thought it was a little unusual. Seller thought it might be a line throwing rifle. Have received some e-mail replies that it was probably a target rifle. It's missing the rear sight and has a one piece handguard. Cleaning the brown tacky film off the metal revealed a beautiful blue finish, the stock also has a very fine finish on it. Not like a military issue stock. It has volley sights and matching numbers on the barrel, receiver, bolt and nosecap. It is marked BSA,1911, Sht LE, #1 MkIII.
Check the pics, see what you think.

The top one piece hand guard looks like a No1 MKV item.
