Holes in M1A1 Stock ?

Cruised 2 auction sites in the last couple days.
Where have the nice stocks gone ?
Seen nothing but junk.

Did happen across this complete M1A1 being offered up on GB.
But wondering what the 2 holes under the fore stock were used for......
A forward grip ?
If so, What a shame.

Years ago (when stuff was cheap) guys use to install a Thompson vertical grip on their M1A1 stocks. I know because I bought one years ago with the
Thompson grip still attached. Also has a poor job of routing out the inside for M2 parts. Wire and leather are excellent. I should clean-up the inside
with a mill

That could be repaired fairly easily by plugging and if done carefully, you'd barely be able to see it.

If the plug was cut from cross grain that matched...yes... The selector routing could be sorted too.

A dowel rod would be end grain and it’ll never match right. The plug cutter is the only way to go especially when they’re this cheap.

I have a S'G' stock that had a jagged hole in nearly the same area, believed to be from some type of shrapnel. Before I got it, it had been in the hands of Rick B who fit a patch in it.
Patch was cut like a upside down /\ over a upright \/
Sideways patch looked like <>
That shape hid the edges better than a circle patch insert would.
Wood patch was stained before being glued in.
Best I can describe it is like cutting out a piece of vinyl flooring (no bigger than needed) and glued it in. Care was taken so the grain flow and color matched closely on the underside.. the visible side.
The thickness was equaled by spot sanding/rasping the interior side. Emory paper smoothed it out quickly.
In the years that followed it has become nearly invisible. Except to Rick B.... who recognized it as a repair he had done.
In all very much like the Dutchman patches the stock makers did during WWII to save wood....... but took the time for a better grain match.

Got this stock from an old friend who paid all of $9.95 for it, many years ago. Late Inland and without metal stock. Same here Jim,
When I seen the holes in the stock on the GB auction, 1st thought was.....
Did someone mount a IR Sniper Scope on a M1A1 folder ??
Then realized it was the wrong hole pattern.

You should sell that Marlin/Underwood.
Real CC, I cut and a nice stock. The holes can be fixed pretty easily..... I'd bet it would pull over $200.

Have you seen the cracked/splintered junk on Ebay lately?
Starting to make FRANKENSTOCK look pretty good....... Well maybe not as bad any way.

I'm still sitting on a lot of wood with little time to mess with any.
Still have that WRA Springtube receiver I was gonna list 2 years ago...
