Have just picked up this mystery bayonet that consists of a spike blade brazed to a No.5 bayonet hilt and crossguard with a round knurled metal handle. Sadly it won’t fit properly on my L2A3 Sterling SMG as the muzzle ring is 2-3mm too low. I don’t know if it would fit on a No.5 carbine as I don’t own one.
The seller didn’t know what it was other than vaguely suggesting it might be some sort of trials piece. It could of course be the result of someone getting hold of a broken No.5 bayonet or some scrap parts and deciding to put them together for fun. However, it has the rather intriguing broadarrow marking and no.17 added in yellow paint (which looks old) and why would an amateur civilian metalworker do that? Would a small batch made in a military workshop be marked in that way? It also looks like there are some letters stamped on the blade, but I can’t make them out.
Over to the experts.
