Interesting that the exposed wood almost looks charred.
Is that how it looks in person?

I'll be honest when I got my first carbine at age 18 a $175 Postal Meter/Blue Sky junk re-park over pitting,no muzzle left at all, bolt slam shut when ever it felt the need= worn out hole in the receiver. Anyhow it had a I-Cut IO stock cut down to low wood, with visible cartouches, I did the same thing to the sling well, it had a heavy coat of varnish and I was bound and determined to get that D-tip sling past the oiler. Live and learn.
