1903 Feeding Issue

My 1903 misfed with the original milled follower. I replaced it with the ww2 stamped version and my problems went away. This is a fairly common issue with milled plates from what I have seen on the web, and the swap to stamped - which are just slightly different in profile - seems to be a big help for the 5th round.

From what I can see, the spring is the correct one and so is the follower. Is there something amiss in the feed lip on the right side?

It's hard to say without seeing it. Actually seeing the function, or failure...

Solved the problem.

I put in a 1903A3 spring. Function is now 100%.

Lost a good friend a couple of years back, and before he died he gave away most of his guns to people he knew liked them. He had built a really nice sporter our of a Remington 03-A3 barreled action and gave it to a friend's daughter. It had the same feeding problem, so he ask if I would fix it. Unless you hit the bolt handle with the heel of your hand it simply would not feed. I polished everything that the cartridge contacted, and this helped but did not solve the problem. He had put a milled follower in the rifle, so to check one I knew worked I put another 03-A3 follower in it and it worked. Put the follower in his rifle and it wouldn't work. It finally occurred to me that I had put my spring and follower in his rifle, and when I changed the spring it worked perfectly. The spring he had put in was noticeably stronger than a standard 03-A3 right out of the package. The extra strength of his spring just wouldn't let it feed properly.

That's what I noticed about the spring I replaced. The original spring that did not work was much stronger than the replacement.

the spring pictured was a 1917 spring, down the road your likely to have feeding issues again using a non looped spring with the parts you have pictured, as the spring sets in, it will loose pressure,
correct spring, follower ect, should be used with the milled parts,.
observation...the follower you have has been ground on, front and back...might look for a replacement.
more info would be needed as well.
looks to be a polished floorplate..is this a sporterized rifle? if so, how well does the stock fit, and how well does the trigger guard fit against the action...
