CMP needs to do something?
In my opinion CMP
should Go back to a limit at 10 cans per year for Shooters With an NRA classification and go back to an active range or club membership. And sell the 10 cans at $60 The amount a Active competitive shooter can Shoot in a year. The are supposed to be supporting the shooting sports anyway, right? Not the Gun Dealer Vultures. It is just a matter of time before widely available CMP 30.06 Marketed ammo is sold 2nd hand at a gunshow to the wrong person and a shooting with it happens accidental or deliberate. What will happen to CMP then? CMP needs to regulate the flow of their ammo like they do the rifles. If CMP truly valued the M1
Garand Rifle and it's American Legacy insted of quick money, they would do this. I know a lot of guys that would love to have an M1. But They allready feel they are to expensive Just for the rifle! What will they think when it costs $1 a pull.. No way!
I bought my first M1 in 1988 From the old DCM after getting involved in Service Rifle shooting in the Army Reserve. Back then There was No 30.06 milsurp ammo on the Market. That Rifle did Not get fired that much for years. It was just to expensive. I would not have started collecting M1's Without the availability of ammo at a reasonable price to fire up interest. Will CMP be able to sell M1's when the ammo dries up?

Good comment...
This is the kind of thoughtful discussion I wanted to stimulate; my guess is that CMP
wants to get out of the ammo business and will as soon as the Greek is gone. Nevertheless, they have to address the resale issue in a politically responsible way - this because one could imagine a whole series of "horribles" that could put them out of business in today's political climate. Most of these scenarios originate with a pick up truck load of stuff from CMP by someone making a fast buck.

I really agree that the CMP should do something to limit the ammo resale crap but your above statement is out and out wrong!
The CMP and old DCM was NOT created for target shooting PERIOD. The reason it was created was to support MARKSMANSHIP in the civil populace, in other words have a proficient population in shooting for militia and 2nd amendment supported kind of things.
The "active range or club membership" ideology is pure bull****, are you saying that an ex military or retired military need a club membership to be proficient with firearms?
Get real and research the real reason the DCM was originally created.

I can tell you one thing, the service is terrible. I ordered some in December, 08, and some in January, and I haven't seen any of it, yet.

I would add that folks need to educate themselves about the differences between the DCM and the CMP
.

Easy solution:
Buy from somewhere else. The service is what it is. To call it "terrible" is a bit harsh.
Look, The CMP does not hide the fact that there are waiting periods that fluctuate depending on the volume of orders. Again, if you are impatient, you are welcome to cancel your order and buy elsewhere.

Well, in my humble opinion, 4 1/2 months is too long. 3 months I can live with, not tending on toward 5 months. Maybe they need to shut off these sales to people hauling off truckloads. Or start requiring match bulletins. At least I am shooting in CMP
sanctioned shoots. And I'm approaching "Winchester." Yes, the service IS terrible. Now I have to waste CMP's time by calling Melissa and finding out if the order was lost, or what. I mean at the end of the day allegedly the purpose of the program is to support civilian marksmanship. Selling truckloads of ammo to resellers is not accomplishing that.
I am well aware I could buy elsewhere. I can also handload. Their original statement was that the ammo would take 3 months to ship. I am used to long waiting periods; under the DCM it might take a year to buy your ONE rifle. just tell me what you are doing, Orest.
